Information & Forms
WHERE ARE WE GOING?
We are going to be traveling to Slidell, Louisiana to spend a week working with an organization called Epworth project (epworthproject.com). Northshore Disaster Recovery, Inc. was founded in September of 2005 by local church and civic leaders as the primary long term recovery organization for the Northshore Parishes in response to Hurricane Katrina. In 2006, NDRI expanded its operations to include all of the Greater New Orleans area. In 2008, the Epworth Project was created as the ecumenical, faith-based, volunteer driven component of NDRI. It was with the addition of the Epworth Project that NDRI began addressing needs around the area not directly related to Hurricane recovery. These needs include home repairs for the low income and elderly, weatherization, handicap accessibility issues, emergency repairs and assistance with routine home maintenance and upkeep issues for the elderly. Since September of 2005, NDRI and the Epworth Project have hosted more than 56,000 volunteers, provided services to over 3,000 clients and logged over 2.2 million hours of community service.
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?
We will be doing all sorts of construction work – big and small to help those in this community. It could be anything from framing to painting, siding to roofing, laying carpet, installing windows, removing debris, fixing, tweaking, building, dismantling, creating and so much more. You will be challenged and if you’ve never touched a hammer in your life….don’t worry – we have something for everyone.
WILL THERE BE ANYTHING FUN TO DO?
This trip is packed with FUN. Top to bottom. There will be more fun than you know what to do with. We believe that serving others is allowed to be enjoyable. Our goal is to provide an element of fun in everything we do from the bus ride to the music we play at meals, to the games we play, to the way our leaders interact and of course all of the unforeseen really, really funny, snapchat worthy hilarity that always ensues. On top of all of this we have some other things planned like a airboat tour in the swamp, catching the sunset over Lake Pontchartrain, touring the French Quarter, and enjoying the beauty of the Gulf Coast.
WHO CAN GO ON THE TRIP?
Our Sr. High Mission Trip at Avon Lake U.C.C. is open to all youth currently in grades 9-12. YES, you can bring a friend. You do NOT have to be a member of our church or a member of any church to attend this trip.
WHEN IS THE TRIP?
The trip is scheduled for Saturday, June 8 to Sunday, June 16, 2019. We will leave at 9:00 AM on Saturday and return around 4:00 PM on Sunday.
HOW MUCH WILL THE TRIP COST?
This year’s trip will cost $450.00 per person for ALUCC members. For non-members the trip will cost $550.00. This includes travel, lodging, t-shirt, airboat swamp tour, construction materials, tools, equipment and food. Meals during travel, souvenirs and similar items are additional expenses for each participant. We have scholarships and financial aid available for ANYONE who cannot afford the cost of our trip. A $100, non-refundable deposit is due by February 1st, 2019 to secure your spot. All balances must be paid in FULL by May 1, 2019. Checks may be made payable to Avon Lake United Church of Christ. DO NOT let cost affect your decision to go on this trip or not. If you are concerned about the cost, please contact Nate privately and we can discuss your concerns.
HOW WILL WE GET THERE?
We will be traveling to Louisiana via charter buses from Lakefront Lines.
WHAT WILL WE DO FOR FOOD?
While we are in Louisiana we will be responsible for the purchasing, preparation, cooking and cleaning of our breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. Katie Schulz will be heading up the ALUCC Food Crew. This team of adults from our church will be traveling with us all week and preparing our meals every day. Two things I can guarantee – you will not go hungry and you will be amazed at the talents of our Food Crew. Along with this we will have some dinners prepared by the team of cooks at Epworth Project including an authentic Crawdad and Shrimp Boil – something you will never forget! Meals on the road will consist of your favorite fast food fare.
WHO WILL CHAPERONE THE TRIP?
Our trip to Slidell, Louisiana, will be fully chaperoned by members of our ALUCC Adult Volunteer Team, other parents of youth going on the trip, and myself. All adults interested in going on this year’s trip must inform me of their interest by January 1st. Anyone who has not attended an ALUCC Youth Ministries Mission Trip in the past must complete an Adult Leadership Team Interest Form by January 1st.
