Mission
Mission is a part of the DNA of this congregation. As we are in service to others, we find ourselves growing spiritually and experiencing a deeper sense of joy and purpose. The Mission Board coordinates the mission projects of the congregation.

We are closely affiliated with several mission organizations, including:
St. Paul’s Community Church in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland – we are a partner/sister church. We gather together for men’s and women’s retreats once a year, and in 2014 we are offering Vacation Bible School at St. Paul’s for the first time. We assist St. Paul’s as they minister to the needs of people in their neighborhood; they are one of the recipients of our twice-yearly food drive, we allocate gifts to them at Christmas, and we help with several of their monthly community meals. www.stpaulscleveland.org
Denison UCC on Cleveland’s West Side is working daily to serve the homeless and hungry people of their neighborhood. Avon Lake UCC make donations of food, furniture and money to assist with those efforts.
Haven Center homeless shelter in Lorain – under the umbrella of Neighborhood Alliance. We deliver meals to the residents of Haven Center, they are one of the recipients of our twice-yearly food drive, we allocate gifts to them at Christmas, we have built an new office to aid in job searches, and we help with other projects and needs on an occasional basis. Avon Lake UCC was named Neighborhood Alliances Advocate of the Year in 2020. www.myneighborhoodalliance.org/shelter/haven-center-homeless-shelter
Community Resource Services in Avon Lake – we support the helping agency of Avon and Avon Lake with food and other donated items on a regular basis. www.aalcrs.org
The Good Neighbor Thrift Shop – is a mission and ministry of this congregation. It is a ministry to those who find there a friendly environment and affordable clothing and household items. All of the profits support the mission giving of the church. Volunteers are always needed at the thrift shop; please consider us first when donating your gently-used clothing and other items! You can get updates from Good Neighbor Thrift Shop on Facebook.
Bike and Build – once per summer we host a group of bicyclists who travel the east coast to the west raising awareness for Habitat for Humanity. We offer meals and sometimes the only real bed these college students enjoy all summer! bikeandbuild.org/cms/
Our church has also partnered with sober living facilities in Lorain County and AA to aid in supporting those need support services in battling addiction disorders.
If you are interested in helping in any of these organizations, please contact the chair of the Mission Board or Senior Minister Kelly Brill. Food drives are held each spring and fall; at Christmas, our Mission Tree provides the opportunity to give to many causes and individuals. Empty Bowls by the Lake is a fundraiser for hunger relief held each fall. Each summer people may sign up to provide school clothes to children in need in Lorain County. We participate in two mission offerings of the United Church of Christ: Neighbors in Need in the fall and One Great Hour of Sharing in the spring; these programs provide relief and assistance to those in need in this nation and throughout the world.
